Qualcomm Enhances Mobile Phone Chips for AI Capabilities, Secures Deals with Samsung and Others
Qualcomm integrates laptop chip technology into mobile phone chips for enhanced AI capabilities. The Snapdragon 8 Elite chip is revamped to handle tasks like image and text generation. Specialised tools will be provided to software developers to leverage the chip's advanced features
This move is aimed at boosting the chips' performance for generative artificial intelligence (AI) tasks. The company, headquartered in San Diego, is renowned as the world's largest seller of mobile phone chips.
In a bid to diversify its business, Qualcomm made a strategic decision in 2021 to enlist the expertise of former Apple engineers to assist in the design of laptop chips. These chips, which were launched this year, are instrumental in powering AI functionalities in Microsoft's Windows operating system. The innovative technology created by this team, known as "Oryon," is now being integrated into Qualcomm's mobile phone chips for the first time.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite chip has undergone significant modifications to efficiently handle tasks like image and text generation. Qualcomm is set to provide software developers with specialised tools, going beyond what is currently available in Alphabet's Android operating system, to leverage these enhanced chip capabilities.
Chris Patrick, Qualcomm's Senior Vice President and General Manager for mobile handsets, highlighted the company's unique position in offering AI technology to developers. He stated, "AI has been one of those where I think Google is moving fast, but we have our own technology to offer that end developer."
Qualcomm has revealed that tech giants such as Samsung Electronics, Asustek Computer, and Xiaomi, among others, have committed to utilising the new chip in their devices.
