Qualcomm Separates Snapdragon As Separate Product Brand With Launch Of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

Updated: Dec 1, 2021

Qualcomm recently announced during its Snapdragon Tech Summit that it is separating the Snapdragon brand into a standalone product brand from its own to give a clear identity between the two brands.

The company decided to separate the two brands due to the company wanting to grow Snapdragon into a leading cross-category technology brand and to "prepare for what’s next". It also wants to broaden the Qualcomm brand appeal while keeping true to the company’s core. However, the Snapdragon brand will still have specific ties to the Qualcomm brand where appropriate.

"We’re giving Snapdragon room for continued recognition and relevance with current fans and discovery and resonance with new ones," Qualcomm said in a press release. "And we couldn’t be more thrilled with the evolution. It’s new, it’s fresh and it’s time."

Customers looking for devices powered by Snapdragon can look forward to a new simplified and consistent naming structure that makes it easier for them to find and choose such devices. Meanwhile, Qualcomm’s mobile platforms will use a single-digit series and generation number to align them with its other product categories, with the new processor Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 boasting features like Snapdragon Sight with a world-first 18-bit ISP, Snapdragon Sound and more.

The Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System inside the chip is also the world's first 10-Gigabit 5G modem-RF solution, with a downlink of up to 10Gbps meaning downloading music and other content on the go is incredibly fast and seamless.

The chip also supports up to 4K 60Hz displays on phones, although it will definitely still take a while before we'll see any sort of such high-res displays on a mobile device. Because it's Qualcomm's first 4nm chip, the company has said we can expect to see 30% better battery life and around 20% better performance, which definitely sounds quite impressive.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will be adopted by brands including Honor, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, Redmi, SHARP, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi and more.
