Pope Leo on Saturday called on political leaders to address the growing challenges posed by artificial intelligence, warning of its potential impact on younger generations and society at large.

Speaking at a Holy Year event in Rome attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and parliamentary delegations from 68 countries, the pontiff emphasised that AI must remain a tool to serve humanity, not replace it.
“In particular, it must not be forgotten that artificial intelligence functions as a tool for the good of human beings, not to diminish them or even to replace them,” Leo said.
The pope, who assumed the papacy in May, has repeatedly raised concerns about AI, including its threat to employment and its use in journalism.
He stressed the importance of protecting “healthy, fair and sound lifestyles,” especially for the benefit of younger people.

Leo contrasted AI’s “static memory” with the “creative, dynamic” nature of human memory, saying that personal life and social relationships hold greater value than any algorithm.
“Our personal life has greater value than any algorithm, and social relationships require spaces for development that far transcend the limited patterns that any soulless machine can pre-package,” he said.
Prime Minister Meloni responded to the pope’s remarks by pledging that Italy would continue to ensure AI development remains human-centred.
“Italy will continue its efforts, both nationally and internationally, to ensure that the development of AI is governed by humans and has the wellbeing of humans as its ultimate goal,” she said.
Meloni also praised the pope’s condemnation of the widening gap between the rich and poor.
