Pope Francis to Attend G7 Summit to Discuss AI, Italy Announces
Pope Francis will attend the G7 summit to discuss the challenges posed by AI, according to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. This marks the first time in history that a pontiff will participate in the workings of a G7 summit. The pope's presence is seen as crucial in addressing AI as one of the greatest anthropological challenges of our time.
The summit, scheduled to take place in the southern Italian region of Puglia from June 13-15, will bring together the leaders of the United States, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Canada, and Japan, along with a few specially invited guests.
Highlighting the importance of the pope's presence, Meloni stated, "It is the first time in history that a pontiff will take part in the workings of a G7." She further emphasised that Pope Francis will participate in a dedicated session focused on AI, recognising it as one of the "greatest anthropological challenges of our time."
Pope Francis has been vocal about the potential dangers of AI and has consistently called for global regulations to ensure its responsible and ethical use for the common good. Earlier this year, he warned against the "perverse" risks associated with AI and urged the establishment of an ethical and cultural framework to guide its development.
Italy, currently holding the rotating chair of the G7, recently approved a bill aimed at establishing guidelines for the use of AI. The bill includes provisions for investment in the sector and penalties for AI-related crimes. Prime Minister Meloni stressed the need for AI to be "both human-centered and human-controlled," acknowledging its potential for both opportunities and risks that can impact global dynamics.
Pope Francis has expressed his concerns and hopes regarding AI in the past. In January, he encouraged people to set aside catastrophic predictions and remain open to new possibilities. However, he also highlighted the dangers of "cognitive pollution" caused by AI, which can distort reality, propagate false narratives, and confine individuals within ideological echo chambers.
Moreover, the pope has called for a legally binding international treaty to regulate AI, emphasising the importance of preserving human values and warning against the rise of a "technological dictatorship" that threatens human existence.
