The company is offering salaries of up to 60,000 yuan (US$8,451) per month for roles such as large language model (LLM) developers and LLM referencing engineers at its Shanghai headquarters.

The LLM referencing engineers will be responsible for the research, development, and optimization of Pinduoduo's LLM reference engine. LLMs are the algorithms that form the foundation of generative AI technology, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot. These engineers will also stay updated on the latest advancements in frontier technology within the sector and support the adoption of Pinduoduo's LLM and artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC) across the company's businesses.

Pinduoduo has not yet commented on whether it plans to launch its LLM publicly or how it intends to utilize it within the business. However, other Chinese tech giants, including Baidu and Tencent, have already developed their own proprietary LLMs for internal use and to serve enterprise clients.

Pinduoduo's e-commerce rivals, JD.com and Alibaba Group Holding, have also entered the LLM space. JD.com launched ChatRhino in July, showcasing how the LLM can significantly reduce the time required to develop cross-team mobile campaigns. Alibaba's cloud unit introduced its Tongyi Qianwen LLM in April, integrating the chatbot into various internal applications, including the popular e-commerce marketplace Taobao.

While Pinduoduo's official website indicates that it began hiring for LLM-related roles in late September, the company has shown interest in AI technology for several years. In 2018, Pinduoduo's founder and former CEO, Colin Huang Zheng, discussed utilizing machine learning to curate product selection on the platform. Current co-CEO Chen Lei, who previously served as the chief technology officer, also highlighted the potential of a distributed AI system to enhance the retail segment's growth at an industry event in 2019.
