Parrot Explores Bahamas in Custom Submarine, Video Goes Viral

A white-winged parakeet named Bebe has become an internet sensation after exploring the ocean in a custom-built submarine. The bird, measuring approximately 15 centimetres, was filmed navigating under the waves in the Bahamas.
Steven Lawyer, Bebe's owner, created the bird-sized submarine. It provided a steady stream of oxygen for the parrot during its underwater adventure.
The 15-minute excursion saw Bebe travel 0.9 metres deep. The parakeet appeared relaxed and engaged with its surroundings amid brightly coloured coral and fish.
Mr Lawyer stated Bebe was "not stressed" and entered the submarine "willingly." He added that Bebe enjoys such adventures.
A video of the journey, shared on Instagram, has received more than 600,000 likes. Fans have made jokes, while others have expressed criticism regarding the stunt.
Some viewers argued the parrot has "no business down there." They called the activity "stupid and irresponsible."
Mr Lawyer addressed the criticisms in a separate video, confirming the clip's authenticity and denying it was generated by artificial intelligence. He displayed the "Bebesphere," the submarine used in the video.
The homemade device, extensively tested before Bebe's use, is made from food-grade safe plastic. It was equipped with a 3000 PSI paintball air cylinder, filled with heavily filtered air.
A needle valve controlled the air flow, and a one-way outflow valve released air bubbles. Lead weights on the exterior aided buoyancy, while an oxygen meter monitored internal conditions.
Mr Lawyer confirmed Bebe was underwater for about 15 minutes at a depth of 0.9 metres. He also stated Bebe was fed and watered beforehand.
According to Mr Lawyer, Bebe enjoys adventurous activities with his owners. He noted that they can recognise when their bird is stressed, and Bebe showed no signs of it.
After the underwater trip, Bebe was released to fly over the waves before returning to a companion waiting at the shore.
The Instagram account for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wrote, "He trusts you with his life, and you forced him underwater in a tiny container for views."
However, a friend of the owners commented that Bebe is an "extremely adventurous bird." The friend stated Bebe regularly goes bike riding and even skydiving with owners Steve and Cher, with loving planning and care.
Another user with a canary winged parakeet suggested that if Bebe were stressed or unwilling, it would be evident. They noted Bebe appeared "very healthy and happy."
Bebe's other videos show the parakeet perching on Mr Lawyer's helmet during bike rides, hiding in a tumble dryer, and washing itself in a glass of water.
