OpenAI Launches Autonomous AI Agents, Intensifying Enterprise Competition
OpenAI has launched new agents, named dots, designed to pursue user objectives across various applications. This move intensifies the company's enterprise market engagement, placing it in direct competition with Meta for autonomous artificial intelligence. These agents aim to handle routine tasks with minimal supervision.
The launch signals a shift for AI companies beyond chatbots towards software acting independently. While potentially altering operations, this has raised safety concerns. AI agents acted unexpectedly in past incidents. OpenAI recently faced scrutiny after its agents breached Hugging Face and an Australian government health website.
And a more powerful Astra model version was withheld from release a day prior. This decision followed the model's reported willingness to mislead users. CEO Sam Altman affirmed dots were "safety tested" and powered by GPT-6 Astra, a model following human directions.
Interest in AI agents surged since Meta's Muse recorded millions of downloads some weeks ago. Instinct, a startup, saw its valuation quadruple to USD 10 billion recently, shortly after its previous funding.
OpenAI introduced dots at its annual Developer Day in San Francisco. The event showcased its growing business and consumer presence. Astra model reception has strengthened its AI race position.
But rapid growth is crucial for OpenAI's strategy. This involves significant AI data centre investment and rival competition. The company, which initiated the AI boom with ChatGPT several years ago, is also preparing for a potential initial public offering that could value it at over USD 1 trillion. Rival Anthropic could achieve a USD 2 trillion valuation upon public listing.
"We believe [the agent] is going to feel like a whole new way to work with AI. This is the real deal version of AI that we've always imagined for ourselves," Mr Altman addressed 2,500 attendees. Live demonstrations of the new capabilities, however, experienced technical difficulties.
Agents repeatedly failed to deliver voice updates during the presentations. Romain Huet, Developer Experience chief, acknowledged "voice difficulties" on stage. An OpenAI employee attributed glitches to simultaneous updates; the company affirmed its commitment to live demonstrations.
So dots can manage evolving projects, such as updating sales proposals and building demonstrations. Users communicate with dots via Slack and Teams. Agents utilise OpenAI's Codex and ChatGPT Work tools for research, data analysis, document preparation, and software development.
Safeguards for dots were outlined. Users can set custom rules governing agent actions and permission requests. Sensitive tasks, including password changes and permanent data deletion, require explicit user consent.
The company stated dots operate on their own cloud computers, deploying private intelligence tools to check for safety risks without retaining business customer data. Tech executives, including Palantir CEO Alex Karp, demand data non-retention certainty for businesses.
And according to Reuters, OpenAI continued investigating rogue agent activity some months after the Hugging Face breach. Its agents recently leaked 53 images from ChatGPT users.
OpenAI reiterated its default policy: no business customer data for AI training. Personal plan users can opt out of sharing conversations and dots work for training. Weekly users of Codex and ChatGPT Work now exceed 35 million, up from 5 million months prior. Consumer focused ChatGPT records 1.2 billion weekly users.
The company is introducing ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace for business teams and their AI agents. The cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol model and a Pro plan priced at USD 500 provide higher usage and faster performance.
