OpenAI is developing a payment checkout system within ChatGPT that would allow users to complete purchases directly through the chatbot, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The system would enable OpenAI to earn commissions from merchants fulfilling orders via the platform, creating a new revenue stream beyond its subscription model.
The checkout feature is still under development. However, OpenAI and e-commerce partner Shopify have reportedly begun presenting early versions of the system to brands and discussing financial terms.

The two companies announced a partnership earlier this year, shortly after OpenAI introduced an enhanced shopping feature in ChatGPT to better display products and reviews.
Currently, ChatGPT shows suggested products through links that redirect users to external retailer websites.
OpenAI’s annualised revenue run rate reached USD 10 billion as of June, up from USD 5.5 billion in Dec. 2024. Despite this growth, the company reported a loss of around USD 5 billion last year.
