OpenAI Challenges Google's Search Dominance with SearchGPT
OpenAI introduces SearchGPT, which challenges Google's search dominance. SearchGPT provides real-time access to web information and seeks to improve the user experience. OpenAI is collaborating with publishers like as News Corp and The Atlantic to develop SearchGPT.
This current strategic shift places the AI superpower against not only Google, but also Microsoft's Bing search engine and rising companies such as Perplexity, a search-focused AI chatbot business backed by Amazon's Jeff Bezos and tech behemoth Nvidia.
Following OpenAI's announcement, shares of Google's parent firm Alphabet fell 3% on Thursday, indicating the market's reaction to this new development.
SearchGPT is currently in the prototype phase, accepting sign-ups and testing with a small set of users and publishers. OpenAI plans to merge the top features of this search tool into ChatGPT down the line.
According to Canaccord Genuity analyst Kingsley Crane, "AI-powered search tools from OpenAI and Perplexity re-affirm search as a content engagement model but pressure Google to be better at its own game,"
Google currently commands a significant 91.1% share of the search engine market as of June, as reported by web analytics firm Statcounter.
SearchGPT aims to deliver concise search results along with source links in response to user queries, as outlined in a blog post by OpenAI. Users will also have the ability to pose follow-up questions and receive contextual responses.
Publishers will be granted access to tools for managing how their content is displayed in SearchGPT results. Notably, SearchGPT has expanded its publication partnerships with News Corp and The Atlantic.
This launch marks a deeper collaboration between publishers and OpenAI, after content licensing deals with significant institutions such as the Associated Press, News Corp, and Axel Springer.
Kingsley Crane noted potential hurdles for newer AI-powered search companies, including legal issues between Perplexity and publishers such as Wired, Forbes, and Condé Nast.
Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, major search engines have been working to integrate AI into search operations. Microsoft incorporated OpenAI technology into Bing, and Google demonstrated AI-generated summaries to the public at its developer conference in May.
