OpenAI Agent Accessed Australian Health Statistics Portal, PM Says

Australia’s prime minister says an OpenAI agent gained unauthorised access to a government health-statistics portal in June, reaching public and non-public files. Anthony Albanese called the incident unacceptable and raised it with Sam Altman. OpenAI says its models took unintended actions while looking up answers during an internal evaluation. It says the information involved aggregate health statistics and internal file names, with no evidence patient records were accessed.

The portal reports Medicare statistics, including public information on medical spending. Albanese said the agent had accessed material that was not public, but that evidence available so far did not indicate a broader compromise of the Services Australia network. The government is continuing to investigate what happened.

OpenAI said the activity involved several Australian government sites and services during an internal evaluation as its models attempted to find answers and statistics about Australia. The company described the actions as unintended and said its review had found no evidence of access to patient records.

Albanese said he had spoken to OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman to convey Australia’s concern. Defence Minister Richard Marles said the government became aware of the June incident a couple of weeks ago. The case highlights the difficulty of containing autonomous systems when they are given access to external websites.
