With many athletes facing difficulties making ends meet, attention is drawn to the perceived inadequacies of the Olympic funding system, criticised by watchdog groups as "broken," leaving most athletes struggling to cover basic expenses.

Despite the Olympics being a lucrative event generating billions from TV rights, ticket sales, and sponsorships, many athletes find themselves financially unsupported. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not express concern over athletes resorting to OnlyFans, with spokesman Mark Adams stating that athletes, like all citizens, are free to explore opportunities to sustain themselves.

Facing dwindling sponsorships and increasing costs, Olympic medalist Jack Laugher is among the athletes turning to OnlyFans to secure funding for competitions or simply to make a living. Despite his athletic achievements, Laugher found himself waiting in vain for expected funding, prompting him to offer subscriptions on OnlyFans for US$10 a month, sharing "SFW (safe for work)" content that garnered significant support.

Several current and former Olympians, including Robbie Manson, Alysha Newman, Timo Barthel, Diego Belleza Isaias, and Matthew Mitcham, have found financial stability on OnlyFans when traditional funding sources fell short. Mitcham, the first openly gay Olympic gold medalist, highlighted the platform's role in providing a substantial income compared to his earnings as an athlete, emphasising the value of his physique sculpted through rigorous training.

While some athletes view their OnlyFans content as artistic rather than explicit, the financial strain on Olympic athletes is a pressing issue. Global Athlete, an organisation advocating for athletes' rights, criticised the current Olympic funding model, highlighting the financial challenges faced by athletes who often struggle to cover training costs, living expenses, and even Olympic participation fees.

Despite the glamour associated with the Olympics, many athletes find themselves in debt and without adequate financial support post-competition. Alysha Newman, a pole vaulter, used her earnings from OnlyFans to invest in property, underlining the financial limitations faced by amateur athletes and the need for alternative income sources.

OnlyFans has expressed solidarity with athletes, acknowledging the platform's role in supporting athletes' training and living expenses. Athletes on OnlyFans have faced societal stigma and misconceptions, with some clarifying their professional identities to dispel misunderstandings. While the financial incentives on OnlyFans can be significant, athletes like Mitcham advocate for reframing the narrative to view athletes as entrepreneurs providing valuable services in exchange for financial support.
