Nvidia is redesigning its artificial intelligence chips to comply with US export regulations and continue sales to Chinese companies, according to a report by The Information.

The chipmaker has informed major Chinese clients, including Alibaba Group, ByteDance and Tencent Holdings, that it is modifying its AI chip designs to meet US rules while maintaining performance.
Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang reportedly shared the plans during a mid-April visit to Beijing, shortly after the US government imposed new restrictions on Nvidia’s H20 AI chips.
The export curbs affected the only AI chip Nvidia was legally allowed to sell in China, potentially costing the company USD 5.5 billion.
Nvidia told customers that samples of the redesigned chip could be available as early as June.
The company is also developing a China-specific version of its latest-generation AI chip, Blackwell, the report said.
The sale of advanced AI chips to China has become a sensitive issue, as US officials aim to limit China’s access to high-performance computing technology.
In response to earlier restrictions, Nvidia began creating chips tailored for the Chinese market that push the boundaries of US export limits.
