Nvidia to Collaborate with Japan on Hybrid Quantum-Supercomputer
Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology partners with Nvidia to build a hybrid quantum-supercomputer. Nvidia to provide both hardware (GPUs) and quantum computing software for the ABCI-Q system. ABCI-Q is expected to be available for use by researchers and companies from fiscal year 2025.
In an exciting development for the world of quantum computing, Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology has announced a partnership with Nvidia, the leading designer of artificial intelligence chips. The collaboration aims to build a hybrid supercomputer, named ABCI-Q, that combines quantum computing capability with artificial intelligence.
ABCI-Q is part of Japan's ambitious quantum computing initiative and will be a quantum-AI hybrid cloud system. Nvidia is already supplying graphic processing units (GPUs) to ABCI-Q, but the collaboration goes beyond hardware. Nvidia will also provide quantum computing software through a cloud service.
The system is expected to be available for use by researchers and companies as early as fiscal year 2025, with a fee-based model. The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology envisions a wide range of applications for ABCI-Q, including drug research and logistics optimisation.
While quantum computers have the potential to solve complex problems that are beyond the capabilities of conventional computers, they are also prone to errors due to changes in the surrounding environment. By combining quantum computing with a supercomputer, ABCI-Q aims to overcome this challenge and provide a more user-friendly platform for complex processing.
Researchers will be able to input problems into the cloud system and receive responses from the computer, opening up new possibilities for scientific exploration and problem-solving. By involving the private sector, the institute hopes to accelerate the advancement of quantum computing technology.
One potential application of ABCI-Q is in the field of logistics. For example, a logistics company could use the system to determine the optimum shipping route, taking into account factors such as multiple stops and maximum load, while minimising CO2 emissions. This demonstrates the practical impact that quantum computing can have on real-world problems.
Nvidia's collaboration with research labs in Germany and the U.K. in the field of quantum computing is already notable, but this partnership with Japan marks a significant step forward, particularly in terms of software development. The combination of Nvidia's expertise in AI chips and quantum computing software is expected to drive innovation in this rapidly evolving field.
