Nvidia co-founder and CEO Jensen Huang said China’s open-source artificial intelligence models are among the most advanced in the world, as the company prepares to resume sales of its H20 chip in the country.

Speaking at the China International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing on Thursday, Huang highlighted the strength of Chinese AI models, including DeepSeek, Alibaba’s Qwen and Moonshot’s Kimi, calling them “the best open reasoning models in the world today.”
Huang said open-source development was “extremely powerful” for AI innovation, allowing companies to contribute to and benefit from a shared ecosystem. He praised China’s approach to open-source engineering as “very clever.”
He also noted the global impact of open-source AI, saying it benefits not only China but ecosystems around the world. Huang added that industries such as fintech, healthcare and robotics could all leverage open models.
Huang’s comments come as Nvidia prepares to resume shipments of its H20 graphics processing unit (GPU) to China. The H20 is designed to comply with US export restrictions and is less powerful than Nvidia’s H100 chip, but remains in high demand among Chinese firms.

Nvidia announced earlier this week that it had received approval from Washington to resume H20 exports. However, Chinese companies have not yet been able to place orders, as US government agencies are still processing the necessary licences.
Huang said Nvidia is working to restore production capacity for its Hopper architecture products, but noted that it takes about nine months from wafer order to delivery of finished computing products.
Analysts said the availability of the H20 chip would ease concerns among Chinese firms developing large language models and increase the presence of foreign chip suppliers in the country.
