Nintendo has received 2.2 million lottery applications for its upcoming Switch 2 console in Japan, signalling strong consumer demand ahead of its launch.

The company announced on social media that the number of applications on the My Nintendo Store far exceeded expectations, and the volume available for delivery on June 5 has already been surpassed.
Despite ramping up production, Nintendo said it will not be able to meet initial demand.
Jefferies analyst Atul Goyal noted that the company is facing a significant supply shortfall, stating, “Nintendo is ramping up production but initial supply will lag far behind demand.”
Shares of Nintendo rose 4% in early trading in Tokyo on Thursday following the announcement.
The Switch 2 is launching amid global trade tensions between China and the United States. Nintendo had paused pre-orders in the U.S. before confirming the device would be priced at USD 449.99.
The original Switch, released in 2017, sold 2.7 million units globally in its first month and has since sold over 150 million units.
Goyal said the Switch 2 is “shaping up to be another record-breaking hardware cycle. Perhaps an unprecedented super-cycle.”
In the fiscal year ending March 2024, Nintendo generated about 20% of its sales in Japan, where it maintains a strong family-friendly brand image.
The Switch 2 features a larger screen and improved graphics. It is priced at 49,980 yen (USD 349.19) for the Japanese language version and 69,980 yen for the multi-language version.
