New Samsung Galaxy A Series Phones Launched With More to Come

Samsung Electronics launched its two latest phones in its Galaxy A series, the A33 5G and the A53 5G. So far, these models are among the higher-end ones in the company’s mid-priced line-up, with retail prices matching Apple’s new iPhone SE version. A higher-end model, the A73 5G, is about to drop as well in select markets. Also, the more affordable A13 LTE is set to be out in April 2022, rounding up the current wave of new Samsung models.

Samsung launched these new phones on the evening of 17 March 2022 (Singapore time) with a presentation highlighting some key features of the new phones. Among these are:

  • A new camera system brought in from the premium S series line, including a quad-camera set-up on the A53 5G with a 64-megapixel OIS camera and a 32-megapixel front camera, allowing for improvements to various photo modes.

  • Super AMOLED screens that the company promises will make seeing them easier even in harsh daylight. The screen sizes are 6.4 inches on the A33 5G and 6.5 inches on the A55 5G.

  • A maximum battery life of two days, combined with Samsung’s Super Fast Charging technology.

  • The Samsung Knox security system (apparently named for the legendary U.S. gold storage facility) features a Secure Folder app to store private files and a new Samsung Wallet to store sensitive data such as passwords, credit card numbers and digital boarding passes.

Samsung also noted that it will use recycled materials on everything from packaging to SIM card trays. Owners may need to keep their charging cords and plugs as these won’t be packed with the new models. Also, in a move that ensures product longevity and potentially lower prices over the long term, they said that these phones can handle four Android OS upgrade cycles before becoming obsolete.

The Samsung A53 5G has been available for pre-order in Singapore since 18 March 2022 from Samsung’s online and physical stores, other online retail outlets, and consumer electronics stores. The A53 5G is available on 1 April 2022 and the A33 5G on 22 April 2022. The recommended retail price (including GST) is S$678 for the A53’s 256GB model, S$598 for the A53 128GB and S$478 for the A33 with 128GB storage.

Buried deep in Samsung’s global press release, though, is an announcement spotted by Trusted Reviews. Another possibly higher-end model, the A73 5G, is due to drop in select markets on 22 April 2022. There is no word from Samsung as to when it will come out in Singapore. Also, almost nothing is known about its features.

To round up the current Galaxy A line for 2022, Samsung is also releasing a more affordable A13 LTE phone in Singapore on 22 April 2022 with a recommended retail price of S$248. The specs include a 6.6-inch display, with 128GB internal memory and a quad-camera set-up (but likely to be different from the higher-end models). Also, to match the new releases, the company announced that it will release new onyx coloured versions of its Galaxy Buds Live and Galaxy Buds 2 accessories.

The Samsung Galaxy A series first launched in October 2014 as the smartphone maker’s more affordable line. Its first model was the Galaxy Alpha and has since gone into eight generations, including the one launched in March 2022.

  • Samsung Electronics launched the new generation of its Galaxy A series with the A33 5G and A53 5G on 17 March 2022, incorporating the camera system from the premium S series and other feature enhancements.

  • Three phones from the new A series, including the A13 LTE, are set to be released in Singapore within April 2022.

  • An additional model, the A73 5G, is slated for launch in select markets on 22 April 2022, with a further roll-out expected to follow.
