The spyware has been linked to Israeli firm NSO. The flaw was found when Citizen Lab inspected the Apple device of an employee from a Washington-based civil society group.

The device had been infected with NSO's Pegasus spyware. Citizen Lab believes that the attacker made a mistake during the installation, which allowed them to discover the spyware. Apple has confirmed that using the "Lockdown Mode" security feature on their devices can block this particular attack.

The flaw affected iPhones running the latest version of iOS, but Apple has since issued updates to fix the vulnerability. NSO has been blacklisted by the U.S. government since 2021 for alleged abuses.
