Nearly 90% of videogame developers are using artificial intelligence agents to automate tasks and reduce costs, according to a new Google Cloud survey.

The study, conducted with The Harris Poll, found that 87% of developers across the United States, South Korea, Norway, Finland and Sweden are leveraging AI to streamline repetitive work and focus on creative development.
The report, released Monday, comes as the gaming industry faces rising development costs and longer production cycles, driven by high consumer expectations and fierce competition.
About 44% of developers said they use AI agents to process and optimise content such as text, voice, code, audio and video. These tools allow developers to make autonomous decisions and accelerate workflows.
Despite the benefits, the use of AI in gaming remains controversial. Concerns include potential job losses, intellectual property issues and reduced wages.
In 2024, Hollywood’s videogame performers went on strike over AI and pay disputes. That same year, more than 10,000 industry jobs were lost amid studio closures.

Still, the industry is expected to rebound in 2025 and 2026, with new console launches and premium game titles projected to drive spending.
The survey also revealed that 94% of developers believe AI will reduce overall development costs in the long term. However, about 25% said it remains difficult to measure the return on investment from AI, and many cited high integration costs.
Data ownership is another major concern, with 63% of respondents unsure about licensing rights and the legal status of AI-generated content.
