MWC Shanghai 2021: Oppo X 2021 Rollable Phone, Huawei Mate X2 Foldable & More

MWC Shanghai is back and as good as ever after being cancelled last year. MWC Shanghai is usually held in the second half of the year, with MWC Barcelona in February. However, GMSA, the corporation holding the event, decided to switch the dates for this year.
Despite last year’s cancellation, the event is still as exciting as ever especially with companies such as Realme, Huawei and Oppo featuring smartphones that come with features we can’t wait to see in action. The companies participating in the event will also be talking about the advantage and proliferation of 5G around the globe and how it can be used to improve our lives and make day-to-day activities easier to handle.
Here are some of the coolest innovations the companies will be showing off at this three-day event from 23 February to 25 February!
Oppo

Oppo will be presenting various products and ecological technologies that will improve your lifestyle by creating a network between you, your work and your home through the power of 5G. Oppo’s O-Reserve 5G smart antenna system supports the Sub-6Ghz frequency to ensure the highest 5G signal quality. This works well alongside the O-Motion 5G antenna solution which guarantees that its two antennas receive the best millimetre wave signals through a 360-degree rotation.
The Oppo X 2021, Oppo’s concept rollable phone, will also make its debut in the event. This smartphone concept features a rollable screen that is reported to solve the inconvenience of folding-screen phones due to their fragility, screen creases and inadequately protected folding structure.
Oppo X 2021 will also feature a wireless air charging system that will make the process easier. Thanks to its magnetic resonance technology, the phone can start charging as long as it is placed within 10cm of the charging base. Oppo has even claimed that the 7.5W charger makes it possible to play games while charging.
Huawei

Huawei will feature their latest foldable flagship smartphone, the Huawei Mate X2, during the event. Huawei marketed the phone as “The Edge of Gravity” due to its slimness and lightweight. The phone’s centre of gravity is closer to where you would hold the phone, thus making it easier to grip. The phone will have a 6.45-inch display when folded up, and the screen will measure 8-inches when unfolded. Its display has a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz.
The phone will be powered by the Kirin 9000 5G SoC, which gives the phone faster AI processing and heightened image processing. The Kirin 9000 will also ensure the Mate X2 performs well whether it’s used for intense gaming sessions or complex film editing. The Mate X2 will also automatically detect signal changes when you hold the phone in different positions and will deploy less obscured antennas with better reception to maintain optimal connection speeds at all times.
The Mate X2 will boast a quad-camera array with a 50MP main lens, 16 MP ultra-wide lens, 12 MP telephoto lens with 100x zoom and a macro lens that will be able to take photos of subjects just 2.5 centimetres away.
We’re definitely excited to getting our hands on the Huawei Mate X2 if it ever launches outside of China!
ZTE

ZTE will debut the ZTE Axon 30, their newest addition to the flagship smartphone lineup, during the event. This smartphone features their next-generation under-display camera that was pioneered by the ZTE Axon 20 5G back in 2020.
ZTE’s Business Unit President and President of Nubia Technology, Ni Fei, posted a picture containing the ZTE Axon 30 in his personal Weibo account ahead of the phone’s launch. The Axon 30 is said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC, and that the image quality from the under-display camera has been improved compared to the Axon 20.
Not much detail is available yet about the Axon 30, but we’re looking forward to hearing more about it.
Realme

Realme will be giving a brief introduction of the Realme GT 5G smartphone during the event before the phone’s official launch on 4 March 2021.
Realme confirmed that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset will power their flagship phone. Realme has been teasing the public with the GT 5G’s features on their Weibo account and the company’s vice president, Xu Qi Chase, has shared a poster of the phone’s backside. Based on observation of the GT 5G’s promotional images, the smartphone will also come with a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB Type-C charging port and a 64MP triple camera setup at the back.
There’s also a new Stainless Steel VC Cooling System that uses stainless steel to perfect the heat dissipation structure and improve the performance of the cooling system.
There could be more details on the GT 5G released during the event, but we’ll have to wait until 4 March to officially know its specs.
