Microsoft and OpenAI are in conflict over a key clause in their agreement that could impact access to artificial general intelligence (AGI), according to a report by The Information.

The clause states that Microsoft’s access to AGI would be void once OpenAI achieves the technology. Microsoft is pushing for the removal of this provision, but OpenAI has so far refused.
In a joint statement, both companies said, “We have a long-term, productive partnership that has delivered amazing AI tools for everyone. Talks are ongoing and we are optimistic we will continue to build together for years to come.”
The disagreement comes as the partnership between the two AI leaders faces increasing strain.

OpenAI requires Microsoft’s approval to finalise its transition into a public-benefit corporation. However, months of negotiations have failed to produce an agreement, according to sources.
Microsoft began its partnership with OpenAI in 2019, investing USD 1 billion to support the development of AI technologies on its Azure cloud platform.
