Meta Unveils AI Chabot, Rolls Out AI Stickers
Updated: Dec 18, 2023
Meta is joining the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot race.
The social networking giant at its Connect virtual event announced its own generative AI chatbot as well as more than a dozen AI personalities that you can interact with across WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
The newly unveiled AI chatbot works similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT, serving as a virtual assistant that can perform a variety of tasks, such as planning a trip for you or answering your questions in a human-like manner. It’s powered by a custom model that leverages Meta's Llama 2 technology and latest large language model (LLM) research. You can also enjoy up-to-date information in text-based chats, with the AI having access to real-time web results thanks to a new partnership struck by Meta and Microsoft's Bing.
Meta said that apart from the aforementioned social networking apps, the AI chatbot is also coming to the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and the Quest 3 headset.
The new AI also has image-generating and editing capabilities, similar to Midjourney or OpenAI’s DALL-E. For instance, Instagram will soon have two new functions that leverage Meta's Emu image generation model: restyle and backdrop.
Restyle lets you edit your images with new visual styles through text prompts. "Think of typing a descriptor like 'watercolor' or a more detailed prompt like 'collage from magazines and newspapers, torn edges' to describe the new look and feel of the image you want to create," explained Meta.
Backdrop, meanwhile, lets you type prompts to edit the scene or background of your image. "Prompts like 'put me in front of a sublime aurora borealis' or 'surrounded by puppies' will cue the tool to create an image of the primary subject in the foreground with the background you described."
Meta said images created with restyle and backdrop will indicate the use of AI to promote transparency.
On top of these, Meta announced it's been developing personality options for its AI, with unique backstories, opinions and interests. You'll be able to message these so-called personalities on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.
"We partnered with cultural icons and influencers to play and embody some of these AIs," said Meta. "They’ll each have profiles on Instagram and Facebook, so you can explore what they’re all about."
You can chat with personalities played by the likes of Charli D’Amelio, Kendall Jenner, MrBeast, Snoop Dogg and Tom Brady, among others. Meta said they'll be rolling out in the U.S. starting today, with more personalities to follow in the future.
Lastly, Meta is rolling AI-generated stickers for your chats and stories. The feature lets you use text prompts to generate unique stickers in that you can use on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Facebook Stories. The roll out is limited to select English language users for now and will be happening over the next month.
For the future, Meta said it wants to make AI tools available for businesses and creators as well as release an AI studio for anyone to build their own AI systems.
"We’re also building a sandbox that will be released in the coming year, enabling anyone to experiment with creating their own AI," said Meta. "As our universe of AIs continues to grow and evolve, we’ll bring this sandbox to the metaverse, giving you the chance to build AIs that adopt an even greater level of realism, embodiment and connectedness."
