This collaboration marks the latest integration of AI technology between a major tech company and a news publisher.

Financial specifics of the partnership between Meta and Reuters-parent Thomson Reuters have not been disclosed. This agreement signifies Meta's first news deal in years, occurring amidst the backdrop of Meta's efforts to reduce news content on its platforms following criticism from regulators and publishers regarding misinformation and revenue-sharing disputes.

Meta AI, the chatbot developed by the company, is accessible across various Meta services such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. While Meta has not revealed whether it intends to utilise Reuters content for training its extensive language model, a Reuters spokesperson confirmed the partnership with tech providers to license their trusted news content for AI platforms.

According to Axios, Reuters will receive compensation for granting access to its journalism under a multi-year agreement. Through this collaboration, Meta AI will be able to provide responses to news-related queries by offering summaries and links to Reuters content, enhancing the user experience with reliable and factual information.

Notably, other companies like OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and Perplexity, a startup backed by Jeff Bezos, have also established similar AI partnerships with news organisations. Reuters has an existing fact-checking partnership with Meta that commenced in 2020, further solidifying the relationship between the two entities.
