Meta CEO Zuckerberg Criticises Apple's New Headset in Personal Swipe
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg criticises Apple's Vision Pro headset in a video shot using Meta's own Quest 3 headset. Zuckerberg believes the Quest 3 is the superior product, highlighting its value, comfort, wireless design, and wider field of view. Some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the Vision Pro on social media, citing physical trade-offs.
In a direct challenge to rival company Apple, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has taken a personal swipe at Apple's new headset, the Vision Pro. The headset gained attention as celebrities like Diplo and T-Pain were seen wearing it in public, thanks to its "passthrough" feature that allows users to see their surroundings while using the device. However, Zuckerberg, in a video shot using Meta's own headset, the Quest 3, insisted that his company's product is "the best product, period."
The passthrough feature is a common feature in the latest mixed reality headsets, enabling users to have a live, high-definition video feed of their surroundings through cameras on the outside of the headset. This technology has been in development by Meta for nearly a decade and is also present in rival products like Sony's PlayStation VR 2. However, Zuckerberg expressed frustration that the Vision Pro is receiving praise for technology that already exists elsewhere.
Zuckerberg emphasised that he believes the Quest 3 is superior, stating, "I think Quest is the better product, period." He expressed surprise that many people assumed the Vision Pro would be of higher quality simply because it is an Apple product and costs $3,000 (£2,400) more. He highlighted the Quest 3's better value, comfort, wireless design, and wider field of view as reasons why it outperforms the Vision Pro.
While acknowledging some advantages of the Vision Pro, such as higher resolution and eye-tracking, Zuckerberg criticised the trade-offs Apple had to make in other areas to achieve these features. He also took a moment to address "fanboys" who blindly support Apple, stating that every generation of computing has an open and closed model, and he believes Meta's open model will prevail in the next generation.
As the video gained attention, some users have started to voice their dissatisfaction with the Apple headset on social media. Product manager Parker Ortolani praised the device but mentioned that the physical trade-offs were not worth it. Zuckerberg's video aimed to highlight the strengths of the Quest 3 and challenge the perception that the Vision Pro is the superior choice.
In the future, Zuckerberg discussed his vision for mixed reality technology and criticised those who blindly believe Apple will be the leader in this field. He emphasised the importance of an open model and expressed his desire for Meta to be at the forefront of this next generation of computing.
