Mercedes-Benz Collaborates with ByteDance, the Owner of TikTok, to Enhance AI Technology for In-Car Systems
Mercedes-Benz has partnered with ByteDance's cloud unit to improve in-car AI technologies. The collaboration focusses on combining advanced language models and artificial intelligence capabilities. Mercedes-Benz confirms its commitment to China amid evolving supply chain patterns.
This cooperation will investigate and deploy sophisticated technologies such as large language models (LLMs), generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), and big data in Mercedes-Benz's in-car systems.
The arrangement calls for the integration of ByteDance's LLMs, the technology that powers GenAI applications such as ChatGPT, inside Mercedes-Benz automobiles in China. Both firms highlighted their collaboration to improve the intelligence and understanding of future virtual assistants in automobiles by exploiting LLM's strengths in intent comprehension and logical reasoning. The cooperation also aims to improve the speech system's response time and expand its uses in voice interactions, navigation, and entertainment.
Despite the tendency of certain Western tech giants transferring sections of their supply chains from China, Mercedes-Benz reiterated its strong commitment to the Chinese market. Wang Xin, executive vice president of Mercedes-Benz China, underlined the company's expanded investment in R&D in China, as well as its ongoing engagement with prominent Chinese technology enterprises.
The relationship between Mercedes-Benz and ByteDance's cloud unit, Volcano Engine, began in 2023, when ByteDance's Volcano Cheyu app was launched on the Mercedes-Benz E-class extended wheelbase model in China. This latest deal follows Mercedes-Benz's approval from Beijing to undertake level-4 autonomous driving experiments on the city's roads and motorways, making it the first multinational automaker to acquire such a permit in the Chinese capital.
ByteDance has been actively pursuing AI development, notably following the success of OpenAI's ChatGPT in November 2022. In May, ByteDance debuted the Doubao LLM family, which offers affordable price when compared to other models. Furthermore, ByteDance formed a "automobile LLM ecosystem alliance" with over 20 car manufacturers, including local enterprises such as Geely and Great Wall Motor, to boost its position in the industry. Notably, the Volcano Engine website lists Nio, Li Auto, and Momenta, a Mercedes-backed autonomous driving startup, as clients.
