Japan Startup Unveils $3 Million 'Gundam'-Like Robot
Updated: Jan 8
A Tokyo-based startup called Tsubame Industries has developed a remarkable 4.5-meter-tall robot that bears a striking resemblance to the iconic "Mobile Suit Gundam" from the popular Japanese animation series.
The robot, named ARCHAX after the archaeopteryx dinosaur, is equipped with cockpit monitors that display images from external cameras, allowing the pilot to control its arms and hands using joysticks from inside the torso.
This cutting-edge creation will be showcased at the Japan Mobility Show later this month.
ARCHAX is not just a static display piece; it has two operational modes. In "robot mode," it stands upright, while in "vehicle mode," it can travel at speeds of up to 10 km/h (6 mph). The 3.5-ton robot is an impressive feat of engineering and design, combining elements of animation, gaming, robotics and automobiles into a single product.
Ryo Yoshida, the 25-year-old CEO of Tsubame Industries, expressed his vision for the project, stating, "Japan is very good at animation, games, robots and automobiles, so I thought it would be great if I could create a product that compressed all these elements into one." Yoshida plans to produce and sell five of these giant robots to affluent enthusiasts. However, he also envisions a future where ARCHAX could be utilised for disaster relief efforts or even in the space industry.
Yoshida's passion for manufacturing began at a young age when he learned welding at his grandfather's ironworks. He went on to establish a company that specialises in producing myoelectric prosthetic hands. With ARCHAX, Yoshida aims to uphold Japan's legacy of excellence in manufacturing and innovation.
The announcement of this Gundam-like robot has generated excitement among technology enthusiasts and fans of the iconic series. Tsubame Industries' creation represents a fusion of Japanese pop culture and cutting-edge technology, showcasing the country's expertise in robotics and engineering.
