Colin Angle, the cofounder and former chief executive officer of iRobot, has launched a new physical artificial intelligence company called Familiar Machines and Magic. The startup has announced its first robot, an embodied artificial intelligence system designed to interact naturally with adults and families.

The quadruped robot is shaped like an abstracted bear to manage user expectations and avoid direct comparisons to common household pets. It features 23 degrees of freedom to enable lifelike movements and expressive behaviours.
The machine serves as a companion that recognises daily activities and intervenes to motivate healthy routines. For example, the device can monitor phone screen time and actively encourage users to engage in outdoor activities.
The robot is covered with a custom touch-sensitive coat, a vision system, a microphone array, and an audio system. An onboard edge artificial intelligence stack powers the device using a small multimodal model optimized for social reasoning.
Creative Director Morgan Pope joined the startup from Disney Research after witnessing advancements in reinforcement learning and generative artificial intelligence. Pope stated that the technology excels at creating a coherent, lifelike character experience.
Previous social home robot startups failed between 2012 and 2019 due to difficulties maintaining long-term consumer engagement. Familiar Machines and Magic focuses on long-term objectives to improve user lives rather than relying solely on short-term novelty.
Angle explained that the robot does not speak because safe technology for artificial intelligence voice interaction does not yet exist. Instead, the device communicates using a tail, wiggly ears, blinking eyes, and an expressive brow.
The system processes speech and vision inputs through a generative process to determine high-level actions. These decisions are passed to a behaviour engine that drives a reinforcement learning unified motion model.
To ensure physical safety, the robot features a low centre of gravity and collapses downward if power is disconnected. The exterior is wrapped in soft rubber, fur, and padding to prevent forceful impacts.
The device uses emotions to communicate hazards, such as acting visibly scared near an open flame or high locations. The artificial intelligence runs entirely onboard and does not stream private data to the cloud.
The company intends to market the relationship and experience rather than the robotic hardware itself. Angle noted that the device is explicitly designed to be imperfect to motivate human forgiveness.
The announcement is not a commercial product launch, and final pricing details have not been released. Angle compared the expected cost of ownership to maintaining a pet cat or dog, which averages USD 65 to USD 100 per month.
The initial robot is intended to serve as a general platform for future applications. The underlying technology could eventually generalise into specialised forms for elder care, parental support, and other form factors.
iRobot cofounder Colin Angle introduced Familiar Machines and Magic to develop physical artificial intelligence companions.
The quadruped robot uses an onboard multimodal model, touch sensors, and facial expressions to encourage healthy daily routines.
The device processes data locally to protect privacy and utilizes physical padding along with emotional responses to maintain safety.
