Intel on Track for £1 Billion in Cumulative Software Sales by End of 2027

Chief Technology Officer Greg Lavender, who joined Intel in 2021, has been instrumental in driving the company's software strategy. Under his leadership, Intel has acquired three software companies, contributing to its software revenue of over £100 million in 2021.

Lavender expressed confidence in reaching the £1 billion goal, stating, "I think I'm on track to hit this goal by the end of 2027... maybe sooner." Intel, with a revenue of £54 billion in 2023, offers a wide range of software services and tools, including cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

The company's software strategy focuses on three key areas: AI, performance, and security. Lavender emphasised that Intel has been investing in these areas to provide top-notch services to its customers. Additionally, Lavender highlighted the growing demand for Intel's upcoming Gaudi 3 chip, which he believes can help the company secure a strong position in the AI chip market.

While Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) have faced challenges in competing with market leader Nvidia, Lavender remains optimistic. He stated that Intel is actively supporting open-source initiatives aimed at developing software and tools that can power a wide range of AI chips. Lavender expects further breakthroughs in the coming months, which could help Intel gain ground in the data centre chip market.

To level the playing field, Intel is part of the UXL Foundation, a consortium of tech companies working on an open-source project that aims to make computer code compatible with any machine, regardless of the chip and hardware it uses. Other members of the consortium include Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics, and Arm Holdings.

Furthermore, Intel is contributing to Triton, an initiative led by OpenAI to develop an open-source programming language that enhances code efficiency across AI chips. Triton is already running on Intel's existing graphics processing units and will be compatible with the company's next generation of AI chips.
