Intel Launches 12th-Gen Intel "Alder Lake-HX" Series, Including Its First 16-Core Laptop CPU
The 12th-Gen Intel Core mobile family is growing, with the American chipmaker announcing seven new additions at Intel Vision 2022. Chief among them is the flagship Core i9-12950HX, the company's first 16-core processor designed for laptops, which can run as fast as 5GHz across its eight performance cores and eight efficiency cores.
These new Alder Lake-HX processors feature desktop-level components packed in a mobile package, allowing them to deliver on the performance front for professional workflows like CAD, animation and visual effects, as Intel touts. They're unlocked out of the box for overclocking and come in Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9 specifications.
The new series ranges from the lower-end 8-core Core i5-12450HX to the aforementioned top-of-the-line 16-core Core i9-12900HX. All the chips consume 55W of power, which is 10 watts more than the 12900HK announced earlier this year. Being based on the "Alder Lake" hybrid architecture, the chips combine the use of "performance" and "efficiency" cores to strike a balance between performance and energy use. The Core i9-12950HX, for instance, runs at a base speed of 2.3GHz base but can be pushed up to 5.0GHz turbo with a mix of eight "performance" cores and eight "efficiency" cores.

"With the new core architecture and higher power limits of 12th Gen Intel Core HX processors, we’re enabling content creators to tackle the most demanding work flows like never before – for example, executing 3D renders in the background while continuing to iterate on other 3D assets in the scene," said Chris Walker, Intel Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Mobility Client Platforms.
"Gamers and content creators will also have access to high bandwidth platform technologies like PCIe Gen 5 with RAID support, and support for ECC memory to ensure high levels of system data integrity and reliability," he added.
The series offers access x16 PCIe Gen 5.0 via the processor and 4x4 PCIe Gen 4.0 from a dedicated platform controller hub (PCH) for faster data transfers. It additionally supports memory configurations of up to 128GBs of DDR5/LPDDR5 (up to 4800MHz/5200MHz) and DDR4 (up to 3200MHz/LPDDR4 4267MHz) with Error Correcting Code (ECC) capability. The chips also features Wi-Fi 6/6E (Gig+) connectivity and access to the new 6GHz spectrum.
Intel said the processors will power workstations and gaming laptops of major manufacturers later this year, including systems from Dell, HP and Lenovo, among others.
