India Rescues Citizens Forced into Cyber Fraud Schemes in Cambodia
The Indian government has rescued and repatriated approximately 250 citizens from Cambodia, with 75 of them being rescued in the last three months. More than 5,000 Indians are believed to be trapped in Cambodia and forced to participate in cyber fraud schemes. The Indian government is working closely with Cambodian authorities to crack down on those responsible for these fraudulent schemes.
In a commendable effort, the Indian government has taken swift action to rescue its citizens who were lured into employment in Cambodia and subsequently forced to participate in cyber fraud schemes. The Indian embassy in Cambodia has been working closely with Cambodian authorities to ensure the safe repatriation of these individuals. According to Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India's Ministry of External Affairs, approximately 250 Indians have already been rescued, with 75 of them being repatriated in the last three months alone.
This move comes in response to alarming news reports that more than 5,000 Indians are currently trapped in Cambodia, being coerced into carrying out cyber frauds targeting people back home. Jaiswal emphasised that the Indian government is actively collaborating with Cambodian authorities and agencies in India to crack down on those responsible for these fraudulent schemes.
To prevent further exploitation, the Indian government and its embassy in Cambodia have issued multiple advisories to raise awareness among its citizens about such scams. These advisories aim to educate individuals about the risks associated with accepting employment offers abroad and to encourage them to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of such opportunities.
While the Indian government has taken swift action to rescue its citizens, the Cambodian embassy in India has not yet responded to requests for comment on this matter.
