Huawei’s Pura 80 Ultra has claimed the top spot in Dxomark’s global smartphone camera rankings, surpassing the iPhone 16 Pro Max, Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.

The flagship device scored 175 points overall, outpacing the iPhone 16 Pro Max at 161 points, Pixel 9 Pro XL at 160 points, and Galaxy S25 Ultra at 151 points.

The Pura 80 Ultra also matched the iPhone 16 Pro Max in video performance, a category where Apple has traditionally led.

Huawei’s camera-focused approach includes a 1-inch type primary sensor, a variable aperture lens ranging from f/1.6 to f/4.0, and a dual-periscope zoom system.

The camera system features a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 40-megapixel ultrawide sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, and a 50-megapixel telephoto sensor with interchangeable 3.7x f/2.4 and 9.4x f/3.6 optical lenses.

The dual-periscope zoom system uses a movable prism to direct light to either telephoto lens, allowing both to share a single sensor and reducing internal space requirements.

The variable aperture enables the camera to adjust to lighting conditions, offering natural bokeh at f/1.6 and increased depth of field at f/4.0 for group shots.

Despite its camera strengths, the Pura 80 Ultra faces major limitations outside China due to US trade restrictions.

The device lacks Google Mobile Services, including the Google Play Store, and relies on Huawei’s Kirin 9020 processor, which trails behind Apple and Snapdragon chipsets.

Additionally, while the phone supports 5G hardware, it is not functional outside China.

These limitations make the Pura 80 Ultra difficult to recommend as a primary device in the US and Europe.

However, photography enthusiasts may consider it as a dedicated camera device alongside their main smartphone.

Huawei’s focus on hardware innovation over software services may be a result of trade restrictions, pushing the company to lead in camera technology.
