Huawei Launches Mate 50 Series in Malaysia

Huawei is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its flagship Mate line of handsets with the launch of the Mate 50 series in Malaysia. The new series consists of three models: the Mate 50, the Mate 50 Pro and the Mate 50 Pro Orange Vegan Leather.

All three flagships, as the Chinese brand touts, feature “breakthrough technology and innovations,” highlighted by the inclusion of a 50MP camera with a 10-size adjustable physical aperture of F1.4 to F4.0. On Auto, the aperture adjusts itself to match the identified scene and scenario, while on Professional, you can manually set the depth of field and degree of blur that you want. The main camera is joined by a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 12MP periscope telephoto camera that supports a zoom range of up to 200x.

The Mate 50’s cameras are also part of Huawei’s new imaging brand XMAGE, which it launched in July 2022. The brand now looks to develop and advance mobile photography technologies independently after parting ways with its camera partner Leica earlier this year.

Design-wise, the flagships retain the iconic symmetry and Space Ring that the Mate series is known for, while flaunting a new step-patterned embossing. The series ships with two different types of rear covers, glass and vegan leather. The former comes in two colours, silver and black, while the latter comes in a bright orange that Huawei says is inspired by the sun.

The Mate 50 series also features “Kunlun Glass” which consists of 10 quadrillion-level nanocrystals. This supposedly improves the flagships’ resilience and drop resistance.

Other key features include a curved OLED panel that supports variable refresh rates – 90Hz for the base model and 120hz for the Pro – a 13MP ultra-wide-angle selfie camera and a 4,700mAh battery that supports up to 66W fast charging. Under the hood, they all pack a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage. All three handsets also run EMUI 13 out of the box.

The Mate 50 series is available for pre-order now until 11 November 2022 across all Huawei Experience Stores, the brand's official website, official Shopee and Lazada stores and authorised partners such as SenHeng, senQ, Harvey Norman and Urban Republic. The Mate 50 (8 GB RAM + 256 GB ROM) is priced at RM 3,699. The Mate 50 Pro (8 GB RAM + 256 GB ROM) is priced at RM 4,499. And the Mate 50 Pro Orange Vegan Leather (8GB RAM + 512 GB ROM) is priced at RM 5,299. Unfortunately, pricing and availability in Singapore is yet to be announced, but we're certainly expecting it soon!
