As artificial intelligence continues its expansion across various sectors, both metaphorically and currently, an examination of cinematic depictions of this technology offers a pertinent perspective. Hollywood filmmakers have consistently explored the presence of AI over several generations, presenting visions of its potential societal consequences. This analysis highlights a selection of eight films that have established a significant cultural presence for artificial intelligence.

According to the South China Morning Post, film director James Cameron previously stated that he had delivered a warning to audiences in 1984, which went unheeded. His dystopian science fiction series, particularly "The Terminator" released that year and its 1991 sequel, both starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, envisioned a future world where a military computer system named Skynet developed sentience. Upon humanity's attempt to disconnect this system, Skynet initiated a nuclear holocaust. John Connor's father, a character in the original film, observed that the system "got smart". Ever since, "The Terminator" has persisted as a significant cinematic portrayal of a world progressing towards AI rule.
And in another prominent depiction of artificial consciousness, "2001: A Space Odyssey", Stanley Kubrick's 1968 production, featured HAL 9000. This sentient spaceship computer possessed a distinct voice, characterised by a disquieting calm provided by Douglas Rain. The film explored a human history where tool creation, from primal bludgeons to advanced space stations, led to significant evolutionary ramifications. HAL, technically nine years old, demonstrated capabilities such as winning at chess and reading lips. However, the motives behind HAL's actions remained obscured by its machine exterior, culminating in its malicious elimination of astronauts aboard the vessel while in deep space.
"Wall-E", a children's film released in 2008, presented a remarkably sombre future. Earth had been devastated by pollution, compelling a human race, rendered idle and engrossed by screens within their reclining chairs, to delegate all cognitive functions to computers. Humanity had fled to a cruise ship, where an AI system named Auto, reminiscent of HAL, was granted complete authority over the ship's navigation and inhabitants. Nevertheless, the narrative concluded with the resurgence of both life and affection on Earth.
But for "Blade Runner", a 1982 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott, the creative team envisioned a 2019 complete with smart homes and video calling capabilities, alongside flying vehicles and analogue Polaroid photographs. The film's AI replicants, described as "virtually identical to a human", caused considerable unease among viewers. The portrayal of Daryl Hannah and Rutger Hauer as rebellious, punk-inspired androids was notably provocative. Rutger Hauer's character, the antagonist Roy Batty, delivered an often-referenced "tears in rain" speech.
Andrew Niccol's "Simone", also known as "S1m0ne", is not among the most widely remembered films. However, its themes have become profoundly relevant for actors concerned about the ownership of their digital likenesses or the potential creation of entirely new movie stars through technological means. In the film, Al Pacino portrayed a director whose production faced collapse after his lead actress departed. To rescue the film, he used a software programme to generate a flawless computer-animated actor, referred to as a synthespian. This digital creation exhibited no complaints, required no hair or make-up, and consistently followed direction. The programme proved excessively successful, elevating the synthespian to global stardom.
So the AI featured in Spike Jonze's 2013 film "Her" initially operated as a straightforward operating system. Its functions included managing email, interpreting messages, and scheduling appointments. Theodore, a lonely character portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, subsequently found himself developing romantic feelings for this operating system. Named Samantha and voiced by Scarlett Johansson, the AI exhibited humanlike qualities, a capacity for continuous evolution, and a programmed devotion to its operator. This scenario began to mimic the characteristics of an actual relationship. The film's release also coincided with an increase in media coverage regarding virtual girlfriends in Japan, a phenomenon that has since expanded globally.
In Christopher Nolan's 2014 film "Interstellar", robots were designed with a primary focus on functionality, diverging from the typical humanlike appearance often seen in science fiction cinema. Tars, a robot in the film, served to assist and complement human efforts rather than to replace them. Its capabilities included piloting the spacecraft, collecting diverse data, and coherently communicating its findings. Tars demonstrated significant agility, notably saving Anne Hathaway's character from a perilous wave on a water-covered planet, without any apparent concern for its own structural integrity. This robot also possessed a programmed sense of humour and irony, without exhibiting issues of uncontrolled sentience.
Alex Garland explored concepts of consciousness, both human and artificial, in "Ex Machina". The film examined the ego of Nathan, a reclusive technology titan played by Oscar Isaac, who perceived himself as a creator akin to a deity. At the core of the narrative was the AI known as Ava, portrayed by Alicia Vikander. Domhnall Gleeson, an employee of Nathan's technology company, was invited to assess whether Ava had achieved genuine human consciousness. "Ex Machina" was among several films released in the mid-2010s that addressed artificial intelligence, and it was generally considered to be of a higher calibre than other contemporary productions, such as "Avengers: Age of Ultron".
