Alphabet's Google has announced "Argon", a new top-tier artificial intelligence model, anchoring its Gemini 4 generation. This initiative represents Google's latest effort to compete with rivals such as Anthropic and OpenAI in the AI domain. A company spokesperson confirmed the model's larger size compared to previous advanced "Pro" lines.

The spokesperson further stated that Argon is Google's "most performant model yet," designed for complex workloads. It is considered comparable to other "frontier models" including OpenAI's Astra and Anthropic's Opus on key coding and cyber benchmarks. Initial deployments involve providing the model to select cybersecurity partners. Google also participates in the Trump administration's voluntary process for pre-release model access, a government programme for evaluating advanced AI systems. No timeline for public release was provided by the organisation.

And the company's press release detailed Argon's self-reported performance on various industry benchmarks. It posted superior marks to Astra and Opus in several areas. However, Argon reportedly lagged on other metrics, including two of the four coding-related benchmarks Google included in its release. This suggests a mixed performance profile in the current competitive landscape, indicating areas for further development.

Google no longer intends to release Gemini 3.5 Pro. Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai had previously indicated this model would be released in June. The cancellation follows months of delays for Google's AI model development, which have contributed to the company falling behind Anthropic and OpenAI. These competitor firms have continued to advance the research frontier with new releases to their top models.

Internal changes at Google's DeepMind AI laboratory preceded the Argon announcement. Its founder and Chief Executive Officer Demis Hassabis stepped aside from his role. Additionally, several leaders associated with the Gemini model programme left the company. This organisational restructuring reflects a period of significant change within Google's artificial intelligence division.

But Mr Pichai had previously dismissed the idea that Google was losing ground in the AI race in July. Despite this assertion, Google has adjusted its public communication in recent months. The messaging has shifted from promoting Gemini's cutting-edge capabilities to emphasising its cost advantage when compared to competitor models. This indicates a strategic recalibration in how the Big Tech firm positions its AI offerings. According to Reuters, the announcement was made from San Francisco.

  • Google has launched "Argon" as its flagship AI model within the Gemini 4 generation.

  • The new model is larger than previous "Pro" versions and targets complex workloads.

  • Argon is comparable to OpenAI's Astra and Anthropic's Opus on some benchmarks, but lags on others.

  • Google will not release Gemini 3.5 Pro, following prior delays and internal leadership changes at DeepMind.

  • The company has shifted its focus from cutting-edge capabilities to the cost advantages of its models.
