Google Rebrands Bard AI As Gemini, Launches Paid Subscription
Google has rebranded its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot.
The search engine giant has announced that its Bard AI chatbot is now called Gemini to reportedly reflect the advanced tech at its core.
Gemini will be available in 40 languages on the web, as well as in a new dedicated Gemini app for Android and through the Google app on iOS. It's rolling out on Android and iOS devices in the U.S. in English starting today, with Singapore to follow in the coming weeks.
Additionally, Google introduced Gemini Advanced, a new experience that gives users access to Ultra 1.0, which the company touts as its largest and most capable AI model yet. Gemini Advanced can handle highly complex tasks like coding, logical reasoning, following nuanced instructions and collaborating on creative projects. It's also capable of longer and detailed conversations, allowing it to serve as a personal tutor, for example.
This AI service will be available through the new Google One AI Premium plan, which costs US$19.99 per month starting with a two-month free trial.
Here's a breakdown of the specific benefits of the different Google One plans:
Duet AI will also become Gemini for Google Workspace and Google Cloud. The change will allow users with the Google One AI Premium plan to access Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Meet.
Google assures users that it built Gemini with safety in mind. "Before launching Gemini Advanced, we conducted extensive trust and safety checks, including external red-teaming," wrote Sissie Hsiao Vice President and General Manager of Gemini Experiences & Google Assistant. "We further refined the underlying model using fine-tuning and reinforcement learning, based on human feedback."
