Google to Relaunch Gemini AI Image Tool in Coming Weeks Amid Inaccuracies
Google plans to relaunch its Gemini AI image tool in the next few weeks after addressing inaccuracies in historical depictions. The temporary pause in the tool's functionality led to a 3.5% decline in Alphabet's shares. Google is racing to develop AI software that can rival OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Google is set to relaunch its Gemini AI image tool in the next few weeks, according to Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind. The tool was temporarily paused last week due to inaccuracies in some historical depictions. Google had introduced image generation through its Gemini AI models earlier this month, but users flagged instances of historical images that were not entirely accurate.
"We have taken the feature offline while we fix that. We are hoping to have that back online very shortly in the next couple of weeks, few weeks," Hassabis stated during a panel at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. He acknowledged that the tool was not functioning as intended and needed further improvements.
The decision to temporarily halt the Gemini AI image tool had an impact on Alphabet's shares, which were down 3.5% on Monday afternoon. This decline made Alphabet the biggest drag on the benchmark S&P 500 index.
Google has been in a race to develop AI software that can rival OpenAI's ChatGPT, which was launched in November 2022 with significant success. In the past, Google faced a setback when it released its generative AI chatbot, Bard, which provided inaccurate information about pictures of a planet outside the Earth's solar system in a promotional video. This led to a drop in Google's shares by as much as 9%. Bard was subsequently renamed Gemini, and Google introduced paid subscription plans to enhance the reasoning capabilities of the AI model.
"We are in the early stages of generative AI development, but if the glitches or inaccuracies persist, that's when people start to worry," commented Bob O'Donnell, chief analyst at TECHnalysis Research.
