Google is preparing to launch its Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro smartphones this week, marking a major shift in mobile technology with new AI capabilities, hardware upgrades and a redesigned chipset.

The Pixel 10 Pro lineup, which includes the standard Pro, Pro XL and Pro Fold models, will feature the latest generation of Google’s custom Tensor chipsets, now manufactured by TSMC instead of Samsung. This change is expected to improve performance, efficiency and thermal management.

The new Tensor G5 chip builds on Google’s focus on artificial intelligence, a strategy that began with the Pixel 6 and matured with the Pixel 8, which was marketed as the first AI smartphone.

With the Pixel 10, Google aims to further integrate AI into the user experience. The company previewed its Gemma 3n model at the I/O Developer Conference in May, a lightweight AI architecture designed to run locally on smartphones.

This model is expected to perform optimally on the Pixel 10 platform, offering developers and users more advanced AI tools and applications.

The Pixel 10 launch will also coincide with Android 16, which is expected to introduce new AI-powered apps and features.

Google’s cloud-based AI services are also expanding. The company previously offered a 12-month free subscription to its Google AI Pro plan with the Pixel 9 Pro. The plan includes access to Gemini, NotebookLM, DeepSearch and 2 TB of storage for USD 19 per month.

A similar offer for the Pixel 10 range could help normalise AI usage across the Android ecosystem and encourage broader adoption of Google’s cloud services.

The Pixel 10 Pro is launching at a time when Apple is struggling to keep pace in the AI space. Despite announcing AI features for the iPhone 16 at its 2024 Worldwide Developer Conference, many of those features have been delayed.

As of now, Apple has yet to release all the promised AI tools, with hopes that most will arrive with the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro in early September.

Meanwhile, Google’s consistent AI integration and hardware innovation position the Pixel 10 Pro as a strong alternative. A reported USD 50 price increase for the iPhone 17, even with added storage, may further tilt consumer perception in Google’s favour.

With the Pixel 10 family, Google is not only consolidating its previous advancements but also setting the stage for the future of smartphones.
