Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold Becomes First Dust-Resistant Foldable Phone

Google has unveiled the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, the first book-style foldable phone to feature an IP68 dust resistance rating, marking a major durability milestone for foldable devices.
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is part of the new Pixel 10 lineup, which also includes the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL. While the other models focus on AI features and PixelSnap, the Fold variant stands out for its enhanced protection against dust and water.
The IP68 rating means the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is fully protected against dust particles and can be submerged in up to 1.5 metres of freshwater for 30 minutes. This level of protection is common in flagship slab phones but rare in foldables due to their hinge mechanisms.
Previous foldables, including the original Pixel Fold, lacked dust resistance ratings. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, for example, only carries an IP48 rating, offering limited protection against solid particles larger than 1 millimetre.
Other competitors like the Vivo X Fold 5 and the upcoming Honor Magic V5 offer IP58 and IP59 ratings, respectively. However, the IP5x in their ratings indicates partial dust resistance, unlike the “6” in Google’s IP68 rating, which confirms full dust protection.
Google notes that water and dust resistance may diminish over time due to wear, repairs, or damage. Still, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s rating offers users more confidence in everyday scenarios.
Users can carry the device in their pockets without concern for lint or dust, and use it in outdoor environments like parks or beaches. However, the phone is not rated for seawater exposure and should not be submerged in salt water.
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is set to go on sale in October.
