Google Photos to Offer Smart Deletion Suggestions to Free Up Storage

Google Photos may soon help users reclaim storage space by automatically suggesting which photos to delete.

The feature, currently under testing, is part of a new deletion experience that aims to make managing photo libraries easier and more efficient.

According to code discovered in the latest version of the Google Photos Android app, the tool will activate when users attempt to delete a group of photos. It will then scan the library for additional images that may be suitable for deletion.
Suggested deletions could include blurry images, duplicates, screenshots, and other low-quality photos. This builds on the app’s existing Manage Storage feature, which identifies files that count against a user's Google One storage quota.
The app will display prompts such as “We found some photos you might want to delete” and “Clean up your library.” Users will have the option to review the suggestions or disable the feature entirely.
The feature appears to be triggered when users delete a certain number of photos at once, with the threshold likely set at around 10 images.
While the feature is not yet available, it could help users avoid running out of storage at critical moments and reduce the need for costly Google One upgrades.
There is no confirmed release date, and the feature may still undergo changes or be scrapped entirely before launch.
