Google Photos Enhances User Experience by Identifying AI-Created Images
Google Photos is testing changes to help users identify AI-created images. Metadata tags will provide insights into the software used to create or edit images. The addition of new metadata tags in Google Photos suggests enhanced transparency for users.

The upcoming changes aim to make it easier for users to distinguish between authentic and AI-created images.
According to Android app expert Assemble Debug, future versions of the Google Photos app are expected to have the capability to access more detailed information embedded in photos, known as metadata tags. These tags provide insights into the software used to create or edit the images, offering transparency to users.
Generative AI programs often utilise metadata tags to identify themselves when producing images. For instance, images generated by Google's Gemini chatbot are marked with "Made with Google AI" in the credit tag, while images created by ChatGPT use a tag named "DigitalSourceType" to indicate their generative AI origin.
A recent report from Android Authority unveiled that version 7.3 of the Google Photos Android app includes new code referencing metadata tags such as "ai info," "credit," and "digital source type." Although current AI-generated photos on Google Photos do not have specific indicators, the addition of these metadata tags hints at potential future use by Google Photos to provide users with more information about the image creation process.
While reading and displaying metadata tags may not entirely prevent misinformation, as tags can be altered or removed post-creation, leveraging these tags can facilitate easier identification of AI-generated content within the Google Photos library. This move by Google signifies a step towards enhancing user experience and transparency within the platform.
Although the report does not confirm Google's plans to implement AI image content identification based on image analysis rather than metadata, the use of metadata tags will enable users to search for AI-generated content within their Google Photos collection, similar to searching for other types of images.
It is commendable to witness Google's proactive approach in managing and identifying AI-generated content within its products. However, it is crucial for the tech giant to ensure accuracy in these identifications, as seen with Meta's recent adjustments to AI content labelling on Facebook and Instagram following user concerns about misidentification.
