Google Photos is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a major update that introduces powerful AI editing tools and simplified sharing features.

The new AI-powered editor, previously exclusive to Pixel 9 devices, will now be available to all users. It includes tools like Auto Frame, which uses generative fill to crop and extend images, and Reimagine, which allows users to add creative elements to photos using text prompts.

A new AI Enhance feature offers one-tap editing that generates three versions of an image, allowing users to choose their preferred result.
The editor’s interface has been redesigned to suggest the best edits based on user selections. For example, drawing around an object will prompt the app to display the most relevant editing tools.
The updated editor will begin rolling out in June for Android 8 and higher, with iOS support arriving later in the year.
Google is also introducing QR code sharing for albums. Users can now generate a QR code for any shared album, allowing others to join by simply scanning the code.
This feature is already rolling out on the Google Photos Android app and works with automatically generated Moments as well.
Google Photos launched in 2015, evolving from earlier services like Picasa Web Albums and Google+ Photos. It initially attracted users with unlimited free high-quality photo storage, a benefit that ended in 2021.
