Google's Latest AI Advancements Pose a Challenge to Apple
Google unveiled new AI features during the Made By Google launch event. Google Gemini provides advanced AI assistant features that are firmly embedded into Android. Pixel Studio now offers on-device image production with AI processing.
However, it was the plethora of new AI capabilities that stole the show, increasing competition with Apple in the smartphone AI space. These developments set a new benchmark for consumer expectations in future mobile devices, driving Apple to launch its own Apple Intelligence service later this year.
One noteworthy change is Google Gemini, the company's AI assistant, which has seen tremendous improvements. Gemini is highly integrated with the Android operating system, allowing for seamless interaction across multiple apps and tasks. The introduction of Gemini Live allows for natural and intuitive talks with the AI, which improves the user experience.
One notable unveiling was the Pixel Studio, an on-device image generator that combines local processing with cloud-based models. This feature enables users to create and modify AI-generated photos right on their Pixel devices, demonstrating Google's commitment to on-device AI processing, which is driven by the newest Tensor G4 processor and on-device Gemini Nano experience.
Google also launched a number of AI-enhanced photography tools, including the Add Me function, which seamlessly inserts the photographer into group photos. Additionally, the Super Res Zoom Video feature provides high-quality video zoom, which is appealing to customers who want to capture faraway events. Google even compared its upgraded AI-powered panorama pictures to images from the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Other recently revealed AI-powered features include an improved weather app with AI-generated personalised reports, intelligent list building in Google Keep, and Pixel Screenshots, an app for organising and retrieving information from stored screenshots. These capabilities have the potential to transform how people arrange their everyday tasks and interact with their smartphones.
Because of their customised nature, services such as Pixel Screenshots and Call Notes may raise privacy concerns. However, Google reminded users that these apps analyse data solely on-device for privacy purposes, distinguishing them from certain of Gemini's features.
Google will rapidly push out AI features in the next weeks, whereas Apple's approach to its Apple Intelligence platform appears more cautious. Apple Intelligence, which will be released alongside iOS 18 this fall, will include features such as Image Playground for generating AI-generated graphics and emojis, increased Siri skills, and personalised support.
Both Google and Apple prioritise privacy in their AI implementations, with Google's Gemini Nano handling sensitive functions on the device and Apple's Private Cloud Compute strategy ensuring invisible AI interactions. As the smartphone AI race heats up, Apple is under pressure to match or outperform Google's breakthroughs with its new Apple Intelligence platform.
With the tech sector eagerly anticipating the release of Apple Intelligence and the iPhone 16, the battle between Google and Apple in the AI space is poised to heat up. As AI advances, it will transform how consumers interact with their devices, raising critical concerns about privacy and the future of AI in everyday life.
