Google Introduces Find My Device: Locate Android Phones & More Worldwide
Google introduces Find My Device, a rival to Apple's Find My feature. Utilises a crowdsourced network of over a billion Android devices. Compatible with Android phones and tablets running Android 9 or later.
In a move to rival Apple's Find My feature, Google has announced the launch of its own version called Find My Device. This new feature aims to help users locate their misplaced Android phones, tablets, and other items quickly and securely. Leveraging the vast number of Android devices in existence, Find My Device utilises a crowdsourced network of over a billion Android devices to track down lost items.
Similar to Apple's Find My, Google's Find My Device works by sending out a silent Bluetooth signal from the lost device to any nearby Android devices. These devices then relay the location information back to the owner. However, unlike Apple's version, Google's Find My Device is not limited to only Android devices.
Google stated in its announcement that the all-new Find My Device is rolling out globally, starting with the United States and Canada. The feature will initially be available for Android phones and tablets running Android 9 or later, which encompasses a wide range of compatible devices since the operating software's launch in 2018.
One notable advantage of Google's Find My Device is its compatibility with specialised Pixel hardware. Owners of Pixel 8 and 8 Pro devices will be able to locate their devices even if they are powered off or have a dead battery. This feature is similar to what Apple offers with its own devices.
In addition to Android devices, Google's Find My Device will also work with Bluetooth trackers, which are set to be supported in May. This means that users can track not only their Android devices but also other brands' products, such as Chipolo and Pebblebee.
Find My Device offers several features that mirror Apple's Find My, including onscreen guidance for finding nearby items. However, Google's version also introduces unique features that Apple doesn't have. For example, if the lost item is at home, Nest devices within the user's home can assist in locating it. Additionally, users can share items with friends and family, allowing them to help in the search for missing items.
To access Find My Device, users can download the app from the Google Play Store. With its extensive reach and innovative features, Google's Find My Device aims to provide Android users with a reliable and efficient solution for locating their misplaced devices and everyday items.
