Google’s Gemini AI app became the number one application in the iPhone App Store this past weekend, demonstrating significant user demand for advanced artificial intelligence tools on iOS devices. This success highlights a growing gap as other manufacturers lean heavily into AI capabilities, often leveraging Google’s Gemini AI.

During last week’s launch of the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple CEO Tim Cook and his team focused on the design and style of the new iPhone family. This approach contrasted with other manufacturers who have prioritised their handsets’ AI features.

Apple’s "Apple Intelligence" has reportedly not delivered on promises made at the 2024 Worldwide Developer Conference. Many expected features for the iPhone were delayed, with some pushed back to the end of the year or beyond, and many are yet to be publicly demonstrated.
Google continues to define AI functionality on smartphones. Its recently launched Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro focused on software changes, including Google’s first-party apps and core features of Android 16, indicating a shift from an app-focused to an agentic-AI-focused environment.
Samsung has amassed a significant share of users with Galaxy AI, reaching 200 million users at the start of 2025 and targeting 400 million by the end of the year. The full suite of Galaxy AI tools now features in budget-conscious handsets, such as the Galaxy S25 FE.
Other manufacturers are also advancing AI. Honor utilises AI for deepfake detection, live AI call translation, and smart multitasking with Multi-Flex. OnePlus incorporated AI into its Plus Key, offering quick access to features like Mind Space clipboard, AI Search, and AI VoiceScribe.
The Gemini app’s growth has been driven partly by Google’s Nano Banana model, which enables image editing through descriptive prompts. The app also allows users to create video snippets, offers guided learning, facilitates deep product research, and supports free-form prompt usage in Canvas.
Gemini is accessible across numerous devices, including iPhone, iPad, Android smartphones, tablets, and via any web browser. Google reports that Gemini has surpassed ChatGPT in terms of search interest.
Google’s Gemini AI app reached the number one spot in the iPhone App Store.
Apple’s "Apple Intelligence" features have experienced delays and are not yet widely available.
Other smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, Honor, and OnePlus, are actively integrating advanced AI tools.
