Google’s Gemini for Home, described as the tech giant’s most significant smart home upgrade, is now rolling out. This new system replaces Google Assistant across various devices, including smart speakers and displays.

While Gemini for Home will eventually support the new Google Home Speaker, an audio device designed specifically for Gemini, this speaker is not part of the current rollout and is due out in spring 2026. This speaker is priced at USD 99.
Users will continue to initiate commands with the classic “OK/Hey Google” prompt. However, Google states interactions with Gemini for Home will feel fundamentally new, handling nuanced requests.

Gemini is designed to reason through more complex tasks, moving beyond strict, very clear commands. For instance, it can understand a request to turn off lights everywhere except the living room.
It can also respond to requests such as playing the Cyndi Lauper song from The Goonies.
Beyond smart controls, Gemini for Home functions as a household organiser. It enhances shopping lists, calendar events, and kitchen timers.
Users can instruct Gemini to add ingredients for an authentic paella to a shopping list, or set a timer for a soft hard boiled egg. It can also provide useful assistance when asked about the best time to visit a tourist spot.

Google has published a list titled “100 things to ask Gemini for Home” to mark the rollout.
To gain access to Gemini for Home, users must navigate to their Google Groups settings. They should select the “Global Settings” option and ensure the box for “Add me to their groups” is checked.
Additionally, within the Google Home app, users tap their profile picture, select “Home settings,” and then check the “early access” option.
Upon joining the programme and gaining access, Gemini for Home will replace Google Assistant on all compatible devices.
Google is also expanding its presence in the smart home sector with new hardware. This includes revamped Nest Cams and Doorbells.
Competitor Alexa+, featuring AI enhancements, is also rolling out.
