Google Deepens Its Singapore Health AI Push With a Research Hub

Google used its first Google for Health Summit to announce a research hub in Singapore, a clinical evaluation with a national health cluster and a population health programme built on predictive models. The company said the work expands the National AI Partnership it signed with the Singapore Government earlier this year, and frames the country as a regional launchpad for health AI that can be deployed at scale.

The research hub will start with a local team of research scientists and software engineers working on two fronts. One is foundational AI efficiency, where the team will work with Google's global groups on a priority area for generative models, and the other is local scientific talent, with partnerships at the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.

But the hub also extends work already running in the country. Google Research will scale its health research here, including applying open models such as MedGemma in frontline care settings so the local ecosystem can build secure, customised tools while keeping data sovereignty intact.

Separately, Google.org and Google DeepMind have joined the Philanthropy Asia Alliance's Health for Human Potential Coalition with a funding contribution of USD 7 million. Within that, USD 1 million will support PathGen, a public health intelligence platform developed through the Asia Pathogen Genomics Initiative, to advance research into genomic embeddings, compact AI representations that allow genomic data to be shared for public health intelligence without moving it out of the country.

Clinical work is moving in parallel. Google DeepMind is working with the National University Health System to run trusted tester evaluations of its AI clinician assistant programme, which will be assessed as a decision support tool in routine outpatient practice by synthesising clinical guidelines and medical literature for doctors, with clinicians independently judging accuracy, safety and usefulness.

And workforce training is part of the package. Google is adding a Google AI for Healthcare Professionals Certificate to its Career Certificates portfolio, aimed at helping healthcare workers use AI for administrative tasks and continuous learning, which it will roll out through existing scholarship partners.

The largest commitment sits with NHG Health, where Google Cloud is building a Population Health Digital Transformation Programme that rests on two integrated pillars. A predictive model combines NHG Health's population health database, with personal identifiers removed, and Google's geospatial tooling, alongside environmental, climate, search and behavioural signals that carry no personal data to forecast risks such as chronic disease and frailty at a granular level.

An AI enabled Health Coach on the NHG HealthBot then uses those forecasts to deliver lifestyle advice and preventive guidance to residents, drawing on Google's Gemini Enterprise platform for customer experience, with the first use cases focused on screening uptake and frailty prevention.

And Professor Joe Sim, group chief executive of NHG Health, said good health is made beyond healthcare and that bringing data and intelligence together lets the cluster reach residents earlier. Mr Ben King, country managing director of Google Singapore, said the country's ageing population makes the potential unusually large.
