Google Collaborates with Artists to Challenge AI Stereotypes
Google partners with artists to challenge AI stereotypes. Artists explore the impact of AI on society through photography. Exhibition at the International Centre of Photography in New York City until January 6th.
One of the artists involved, Max Pinckers, captured a striking image titled “Accidental Convergence,” depicting a group of couriers brought together by an AI navigation glitch in Brussels. This artwork aims to shed light on the potential risks of relying solely on AI to shape urban dynamics and its broader implications for society.
The project, known as “Alternative Images of AI,” seeks to move beyond traditional visuals linked to AI, such as robots and computer chips, to develop a more nuanced visual language that explores the impact of AI on people and society. Mira Lane, Google’s senior director of interdisciplinary technology and society, emphasised the importance of using diverse metaphors and visuals to shape public perceptions of technology.
The exhibition, featuring 15 artworks created by the artists, is currently on display at the International Centre of Photography in New York City until January 6th. Each artist brings a unique perspective to the project. Max Pinckers, an award-winning documentary photographer, highlights the power dynamics between AI and human labour in his work, questioning the shift from technology serving humans to humans serving technology.
Charlie Engman, another artist involved in the project, travelled to Ghana to explore perceptions of AI among different communities. Engman’s images reflect the voices of Ghanaians from various backgrounds, envisioning AI tools that could promote equitable distribution of resources and knowledge while respecting cultural contexts. His artwork challenges the predominantly Northern perspectives on AI discussions.
Farah Al Qasimi, the third artist in the collaboration, delves into the realm of communication beyond language barriers through her artwork “Aquarium.” This piece explores the possibilities of connecting with other beings on a deeper, intuitive level, transcending physical limitations. Al Qasimi’s work reflects a desire to explore unseen realms of perception and understanding.
Google’s initiative to engage artists in exploring AI is not new. The company previously collaborated with visual artists to reimagine Alice in Wonderland illustrations using AI. While some artists view AI as a tool for creative exploration, others express concerns about its potential impact on job security and creativity. Mira Lane emphasises that artists offer a unique perspective on technology, serving as a critical voice in societal discussions about AI.
