Google’s Gemini chatbot may soon gain AI video generation capabilities, allowing users to create short video clips from text descriptions.

A recent report from Android Authority reveals new details about the feature, codenamed "Toucan," which was found in the latest version of the Google app for Android.
Android app investigator AssembleDebug discovered references to the unreleased feature in the app’s code. The findings suggest that users may face daily limits on video generation and that each video could take one to two minutes to create, indicating significant computing power requirements.
Text strings found in the app’s code provide further insights into how Toucan might function. One entry states, "Get high-quality ones from text with Toucan, Gemini's new experimental model for generation. Just describe your idea and Toucan can generate a new one each time you ask." Other entries confirm the time required for generation and the presence of daily limits.
The references suggest that Toucan may not be a general-purpose AI video generator but rather a specific type of AI-generated video creation. The tool appears to rely solely on text-based inputs rather than existing images or videos.
The presence of daily limits hints at potential monetisation strategies. Google could offer different experiences for paid users of Gemini Advanced or introduce a credit-based system for additional video generations. Other AI video generation tools, such as Kling and Hailuo AI, already operate on subscription or pay-as-you-go models, often with limited free usage.
Google has not officially announced the Toucan feature, and it remains unclear when or if it will be released. However, continued development suggests that a rollout may be imminent.
