General Motors' autonomous car unit, Cruise, is set to resume testing its robotaxis on public roads with safety drivers in the coming weeks, according to a report by Bloomberg News. The company is considering Houston and Dallas as potential locations for the tests.

Cruise had suspended its operations in the United States back in October following an incident in San Francisco where one of its robotaxis was involved in an accident with a pedestrian. The company is now focused on rebuilding trust with regulators and the public before relaunching its service.

"We have not set a timeline for deployment. Our goal is to relaunch in one city with manually driven vehicles and supervised testing as soon as possible once we have taken steps to rebuild trust with regulators and the public," said Cruise spokesperson Sara Autio.

Cruise is currently meeting with officials in select markets to gather information, share updates, and rebuild trust. The company is also in discussions with regulators about the necessary safety measures for the resumption of testing.

It is worth noting that labor unions and lawmakers have been calling for stricter regulations on autonomous vehicles following accidents involving self-driving taxis from GM and Alphabet's Waymo.

In January, Cruise announced that it was under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding the October accident.

As Cruise prepares to resume its robotaxi tests, the company is taking significant steps to ensure the safety and reliability of its autonomous vehicles. The resumption of testing will be closely monitored by regulators and the public, as the industry continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by self-driving technology.
