GAC Unveils Humanoid Robot GoMate, Plans to Start Small-Scale Production in 2026
GAC Group has introduced its latest creation, the humanoid robot named GoMate. The unveiling took place at an event in Shanghai, where the Chinese auto giant showcased GoMate as the third generation of its in-house developed embodied artificial intelligence robot. Demonstrating impressive capabilities such as motion control, navigation, localisation, and autonomous decision-making, GoMate is a full-size wheeled humanoid robot boasting 38 degrees of freedom.
The versatility of GoMate is highlighted by its ability to switch between quadrupedal and bipedal modes, with a height ranging from about 1.4 meters in quadrupedal mode to up to 1.75 meters in bipedal mode. This design not only enhances adaptability and stability in complex environments but also significantly reduces energy consumption by over 80% compared to similar products, as claimed by GAC. Equipped with GAC's all-solid-state batteries, GoMate offers a commendable six-hour battery life on a single charge.
GAC envisions a wide array of applications for GoMate, including security, healthcare, automotive aftermarket, and enhancing human efficiency and capabilities. The robot is also expected to find utility in sectors such as logistics and education. Following a period of training, GoMate will initially be deployed on GAC's automotive production lines to carry out tasks like inspections. The company plans to introduce GoMate for pilot use across various industries in 2025, with small-volume production slated to commence in 2026, paving the way for mass production thereafter.
In a related development, GAC had previously unveiled its second-generation embodied artificial intelligence robot at an event in Guangzhou. This robot, powered by batteries with a battery life exceeding six hours, features a wheeled structure with vision and haptic systems, alongside AI large models. Notably, BYD recently posted job advertisements seeking talent for its intelligence team, hinting at a potential interest in developing humanoid robots, as reported by local media outlet Meiren Auto.
Li Xiang, founder, chairman, and CEO of Li Auto, expressed confidence in the company's future involvement in humanoid robots, stating that it is a definite possibility, albeit not an immediate focus. With these developments, the landscape of robotics in the automotive industry is evolving rapidly, with companies like GAC and BYD making significant strides towards integrating advanced robotics into their operations.
