Foxconn is looking to Japan as a key market for expanding its electric vehicle (EV) business and is seeking partnerships with Japanese companies, a senior executive said Wednesday.

Jun Seki, Chief Strategy Officer for EVs at Foxconn, said the company sees strong potential in Japan and hopes to finalise collaborations soon.

Speaking at a Tokyo seminar outlining Foxconn’s EV strategy, Seki said the company aims to work with automakers globally but feels a particular affinity with Japan.

Foxconn, a Taiwan-based contract manufacturer, plans to introduce an electric bus and a battery-powered microbus in Japan by 2027. The company is focusing on business-to-business services rather than selling directly to consumers.

Seki, a former senior executive at Nissan, said Foxconn is interested in working with the automaker but is not currently in talks with the company.

In an interview with the Nikkei newspaper, Seki said Foxconn supports the idea of a broader partnership involving Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors. He confirmed that Foxconn is finalising a deal to supply EVs to Mitsubishi, Nissan’s junior partner.

Seki reiterated during the Tokyo event that Foxconn is working with Mitsubishi, though he did not provide further details.

Sources previously told Reuters that Mitsubishi plans to outsource EV production for Oceania markets to Foxconn.

In February, Nikkei reported that Foxconn had proposed a partnership with Honda, aiming to create a four-way alliance with Nissan and Mitsubishi after merger talks between Honda and Nissan fell through.

Foxconn has said it would consider taking a stake in Nissan, but its primary goal remains cooperation.
